L1 to H1 conversion

Hi, Can some one please help me getting answer of these questions:

1. I am on L1 and want to apply for a H1 through a consulting company. Do I have to submit my I94 immediately at the time of filing H1?

2. How and when do I have to get my status changed from L1 to H1? How do I notify USCIS?

3. What if I want to continue with L1 even after I get H1. Can I keep that H1 for later period of time? In other words, I want to wait for a suitable opportunity to get my status adjusted?

1. No
2. If you apply for COS(change of status) then your status change will occur from Oct 1st
3. Apply CP(consular processing), so that you can work on L1 and when you want to shift to H1, you can either apply COS or go outside US, get H1 stamped and then enter US on H1.

I am in the eact same situation that Saurabh has explained.

I am on L1B from and Indian company and planning to apply for my H1B this April through a consulting company.

1) Is COS from L1 to H1B automatically done ?

1a) If yes, Can someone tell me the procedure to specifically tell the consulting company not to apply my H1B with COS ??

1b) If No, does that imply that I can continue to work in L1B for an extended amount of time till I get a suitable oppurtunity and then apply for COS later. How long does this take ??
