L1 to GC

Hi all,
I am currentty asking my company to sponsor me for a GC application. As with anything work and INS related, I am paraniod. What happens if I am made redundant from my current employer, who has sponsored me for my GC from my L1, before I get my GC?

My L1 expires July 2004.

Can I switch to another company to sponsor me?

This has worried me greatly, since I am in the same situation. As far as I can tell, if you are made redundant, you immediately go out of status, but if you find another job within a few days, and succesfully get an H-1 (which won't be particularly quick, since it's a new visa and not a transfer from an existing H-1) then you get to start the GC all over again. I think the best thing is to start looking for another job now if you think you're in danger of redundancy, but the length of a new H-1 for me, given that I have been in the US for four years already, is putting employers off.
