I have an L1 visa and a social security number. My wife has a L2 visa and no SSN. We have been in the US for 12 months and now have to file taxes. What status does these visas permit us to file as Married - filing jointly?
In order to file as Married - Filing jointly she will need atleast an ITIN or Indiv Tax Identification number(it has a similar format as SSN). You will have to pay a visit to the local IRS office - it is easy and straightforward but takes a few days. I had to do this for my wife when I was in F-1 status about 4 years ago. Sorry - I cant remember timing details.
