Kids born in the US - passport given right away

My country does not allow dual citizenship. With the non-US passport we went to get a visa for my kid at the US embassy (when I had H1B). The embassy official saw the country of birth as "US" in the application and asked where the birth certificate was. Without much talk he prepared a passport and handed to us!

The kid is 10 years old now 4 years since US passport. Can the kid revert back to non-US citizenship status? Or there are other options until say age 18-19 that the kid can abandon US citizenship etc.? How does this work?

Many countries that ban dual citizenship have an exception where they tolerate or delay it until the child is 18, and then the child has to choose within a certain frame after turning 18. Find out what the specific rules of your country are; the child may be able to choose the other citizenship (and renounce US citizenship) at age 18.

Just curious, is there a reason why you want the kid to assume non-US citizenship until 18-19 ?
