Just send my N400 application, traveling in 5 months

Sorry for the typo on the title.

I just sent my naturalization forms yesterday (N400). Then I checked processing times and people say it generally takes anywhere from 3-4 months.

I have scheduled travel outside of the US on December 21st 2012.

I'm a little bit paranoid that the N400 process will be completed just before my trip and I wont have enough time to get a US passport, what can I do?

is it possible to "delay" until I'm back? (coming back on Jan 4th) and just use my permanent resident card to get back in?

any recommendations?

It is generally a bad idea to apply for naturalisation AND plan unnecessary travel. The process could well be quick. If you're lucky, you'll have everything done before you leave. You can get a same-day passport at a passport office in one of many cities, so that's really not an issue. Also, if, for example, your oath is scheduled until after you leave, you could reschedule the oath or the trip. Make sure, if you leave before the oath, that someone is checking your post (or change your address to a friend's). This way, you won't miss anything. Still, this could all be done before you leave if your DO is not busy.

There should be no problem. If your oath is scheduled by 1st week of DEC attend, you would have enough time for US pp (expedited) . Don't forget you may require Visa for the country you are visiting. It takes some time.If you belong to India keep sometime for renounciation of Indian citizenship.

If your oath ceremony is after Dec first week postpone same and it can be rescheduled in Jan.

so I'm basically hoping for them to take a long time (after the trip) or be very quick, 1 month before the trip?

do it

I would go ahead with the application and make sure someone is checking your mail while you are gone. For that matter, you can sign up for email and text notifications so you'll get an email saying that something is being mailed and you'll need a friend to go to your home and open the piece of mail. No matter where you are in the process, you can always push things back for your interview and oath and you can go in early for fingerprinting (which should be long over by the time your trip rolls around).
