Just back from Desh

Desh has improved tremendously. Even a rickshawwalla has a cell phone. Everybody is doing good. Except for the population and traffic, life is great. Indian Railways is maintaining a hell of times. None of my trains were late and mind you I travelled on a dozen trains. Jet airways is fantastic.

I miss desh but what to do? Now I am a videshi there. I came back and became (home)sick. My classmate there with just a B.Com already has a huge house and car right in his own city. It is pretty easy to buy anything that you can get in USA - like digital camera or a Gillette razor. Everything is available and outsourcing is booming. Smuggling is no more. All stuff is readily imported. Cars are plenty and the old Ambassador and Fiat are almost gone from cities - except Bombay where the taxis are still Fiat.

Everywhere you can see Flat screen TVs and all new technology. If I get a nice job there I would prefer to go back but listen to this - my better half says "everyone in India wants to go to USA and you want to go back to desh?" How is that for a punch?

That's the way of the world, my friend. Your wife is right, everyone in India does want to come to US because they see salary going up 5 fold + appeal of western world, but now quite a few desis in US want to go back home because we see prosperity in India and are jaded by the glamour of the west.

Moral: Humans always pine for what they dont have!

Well .. it's give and take ... every place has it's high-lites ...
one thing for sure is, once you get used to the organization, clean air, and ease of getting things done in the US, it's hard to adjust to life in Desh again .. when you actually live and work there, you'll see what you have to do to just get a phone line, or other minor things, like papers for the new car that is readily available .. everyone is waiting for a hand out ..
corruption is killing Desh .. otherwise it's paradise .. glad you had a good time.

Welcome back. Nice to see you back. Board was less paranoid for a while!! Im glad you liked your time at Desh. I enjoyed mine for 2 months. I DCF'ed my wife and I expect her in a month!

India is coming up and is to be a world economic power in the next 15-20 years. As expatriat indians we have to get ready to ride the wave and and get on top of it. Starting with a PIO/OIC, we need to restablish ties with India.

Like you said everyone is doing well. I sometimes wonder if I would have made it if I had remained in India . Things are pretty expensive and yes no Fiat/Ambassador cars in the cities. Everyone has a imported car. I had my eyes on a Toyota Corolla (much better than the US model) or a Mahindra Scorpio (a super hit desi SUV).

I too miss my hometown of Madras! I wish I could work there for a few months or years. Ideally I pray I get the opportunity to start my own business soon and I get to work wherever I want (US/India).

Anyway, I do see quiet a bit of India in my future! Enjoy all
