The best bet would be to apply for a EAD renewal because you want to continue working without a break; As far as I know, unlike H1-B where you can work merely based on a receipt notice, you need an EAD application (fresh or renewal) to be approved before you can use it. Another option would be to wait until a week or two before actual expiry and go to the local INS (I hope this situation should never come). You need to weigh the options based on risk/ VSC\'s processing speed/ who is paying for the renewal etc. Hope I have not confused you more - just my 0.02. Good luck.
