Joint Tax filing during I-485 stage.

I have seen many times in the forum that people produce Tax return forms (or joint filed taxes) as a proof to INS that the husband & wife are living together. Is this mandatory to do joint filing the tax during 485 stage? Is this sufficient to produce other evidences as proof that the couple are married and living together?

(Back ground: If I file tax joinly with my spouse I owe money to IRS. If we file separately, we owe less money to IRS.)

Thanks.

How is this possible? 99% of the time MFJ is cheaper than MFS. You're not confusing this with filing as Single? You cannot do that.

Coketin: If your point is straight forward, please let us all know of it. Not only me, even Olson twins or Walmart brothers or any other person/firm have any interest in paying Uncle Sam.

The only way how one can reduce taxes by filing "married filing separately" is if one of the spouse has low income, s/he may be qualified to use EIC. OR One of them using head of household.
Caution: this will give a meaning that each of the spouse is living separately, also may lead to loosing....

To answer your questions ...

No. it it not mendatory to joint filing.

To my knowledge, this is not THE ONLY PROOF to show you are married and living together.

If you ask my personal opinion, it is safer to file jointly. You have already paid so much money to US Gov, USCIS etc, why even think of saving money over to playing safe?

Hope this helps.
