Joint-Sponsor for form I-864

My husband does not make enough money to sponsor my green card, but we already submitted the documents and received the letter which states that we need to show additional evidence, i.e. getting a joint sponsor.

We are now starting the process of filing out form I-864 with his dad. With this said, does our joint sponsor need to make 125% above the poverty line or is it combined with my husbands income (his income last year was $25 000 before taxes). My joint-sponsor, his dad, is self employed and makes $50 000 before taxes but only $15 000 or so after taxes he said. How will this work as a joint sponsored situation?

Thanks for the responses.

Reading the directions to the I-864 the joint sponsor needs to show 125% in income. I suspect that your father-in-law gets a lot of tax write-offs and exemptions because of being self employed. The instructions say income, I don't recall reading adjusted gross income, so I would go with the pre-tax amount.

Yep, pre-tax amount is fine. Also, if he has other dependents that will be taken into account for the poverty line calculations..

Sorry to jump in like this, but when you say the joint sponsor's income need to be over 125%, what does that mean? Let say a joint sponsor has 3 ppls in his family plus one, how much income will the government look at in order to qualify? Even though the federal poverty guidelines says that the income for 4 will be $23,000, how does that work? Please let me know. Thanks.

we just received the mail also in the mail Requesting for Initial Evidence,my sponsor after tax receives between 13k to 14k,so i believe it because of the found,so i want to know if a friend can be a joint sponsor,if he meet all the requirement and what form will he fill, must my sponsor 1st still meet the requirement when we already have a joint sponsor.and will the both forms filled all over again for sponsor 1 and sponsor2,remember sponsor 2 is not a family member, what form will they need to fill now.
