hey guys,

recap of my case: got married to USC, legal in US til Oct 06, both just finished college and are lacking work history W2s etc. We both started working after this tax season. I have substantial cash saving which i'm transferring to the US. So Affidavit of Support might be an issue. We've got plenty history together e.g. joint bills/lease etc.

how much would an immigration lawyer cost in SoCal San Diego (anyone know any good websites to get qoutes?), I presume that they work with a flat fee for immigration cases? Whats the max i should be paying?

also i'm not sure as to who qualifies to be a joint sponsor? the CIS document just talks about that a joint sponsor needs to have sufficient funds. And I don't have any family in US (except my mom's cousin), and my wife's family is out of the question. but i have plenty friends who will sign the paper work. also i'm starting a new job in a month which will allow me to sponsor myself come interview time.

thanks for all the help

You do not really need a lawyer for a marriage-based case. Just read the instructions for I-485 and start filling out the forms. You could get a lawyer or paralegal to look over you application before you file it (should only take an hour or two so it does not cost more than a few hundred dollars), but you are better off just filing it yourself.

any us citizen or green card holder can be a joint sponsor.so if you have anyone who qualifies and has sufficient income, they can definitly cosponsor you. good luck.

slightly off topic but how much does the civil surgeon health check cost on average and is it covered by health insurance? secondly, my wife and i both have hsv-2 (which is how we met through a support group two years ago). obviously it is a contagious std, however neither of us really uses any medicine since the symptoms only appear once a year. so what type of delays can this cause in the gc process? secondly since symptoms are rare and diagnosis without symptoms (even through blood test) doesn'r show up that often is it something that we should tell the civil surgeon or just see if he picks up on it?

There are a couple of threads on the medical, so you will find lots of info when you search this forum. I paid $250 incl. shots, but it can get cheaper if you show them your shot history. You can call the service number 24 hours to find out about designated civil surgeons in your area, call all of them to compare, because some are cheaper than others.
My insurance didn't pay for it, but I only have a traveler's health insurance, so it may be different with yours.

I don't know if your disease will cause a problem, so I can't say anything about that. I know that I had to fill out a form about my medical history and had to list major illnesses that I had and any medication I was taking. So I guess you will have to tell the examining doctor.
Hm, but you should ask someone who knows about that, so you are prepared in case it does cause a problem with your application.
