This was actually my spouse's application which was approved on August 1 as per AVM. This was a follow join application. My I-485 ND was Aug 2001 and I was approved within six months in Feb 14th 2002
I was lucky to get married and interfile my wife's application before I was approved.
Though I was quite sure that she would be approved was bit tense with all the uncertanity.

CONGRATS

How long did the FTJ approach take and how did you go about it?
Please let us know as there are a lot of us single guys in the 485 stage and would want to do a FTJ.

With INS there are no hard and fast rules. My I-485 was approved in less than 6months from the notification date. But that was way back in 2001.My approval date and my wife's application's recceipt date had only a few weeks gap. We were lucky that it all happend in a perfect way.

My advice to single guys who have applied I-485 is that get married at the earliest and join ur spouse also to the I-485 appliction. I have a friend who is suffering because he could get married only a few weeks after his I-485 was approved. So don't make the same mistake he did. Atleast get a govt ceremnoy done if you can't do the proper marriage due to no auspicious day etc.

Also while you are planning to get married, start the FTJ process also. Most of the lawyers(luckly my lawyer took only weeks) take a few weeks if not monhts to file/FTJ an I-485. So you can do things like gathering all the necessary documents for spouse, getting the medical done, really pushing ur lawyer , company etc.
Anyway don't have a laid back approch. If you can do somehting today do not postpone till tomorrow.
And last but least don't get married to someone just because u have to file I-485. Try to find the right person as this is much more important than GC
