Hello Dear Doctors,
I am a new user and I seek for you advise. I am on J-2 visa now. My husband is working in research and has J 1 visa without 2 years hhr. Is it any chance for me to do residency on J-2 visa, on which I am now. Do some program allow this?
Thank you

Yes this can be done and is HIGHLY preferred over getting your own J1. You have to keep records to show that your income is not necessary to feed the family. You can apply for an employment authorization document. You will just tag along in your husbands J1--> immigration case.
Towards the programs, you just mark 'other' under status and state 'authorized to work in the US'.

The only snag I see with this is that your husband might be faced with a situation where he needs to change to an H1b or O1 (when they offer him that junior faculty position that would really allow him to further his career). Both of those visas don't allow you to get an employment status (at that point, you could badger your program into sponsoring you for an H1b).

Whatever you do remember: H1B OR NOT TO BE.

Don't let some dipsh#t program secretary or hospital HR person intimidate you into getting your own J1, just because she is too stupid or lazy to read up on the applicable rules.

Dear hadron! Thank you for response!
Do you happen to know whom I can ask about this? Program Director directly? I called many programms and secretaries seem to be not aware of this possibility.
Thank you again
