J1 Waiver Process before/after J1 extension

Hi All ,

I have started planning for getting the J1-waiver. But I am stuck with a doubt.....

My J1 visa expires on Jan-2008. It has to be renewed for another 3 years,which will be done by Nov-2007.

My question is ........
can i start applying for J1 waiver now or should i wait until the j1 extension happens

J1 extension doesn't take long. So better take the extension and start waiver process. You need to submit all DS2019 forms when you apply for a waiver, so once you start waiver process, you cannot get your J1 extended. Go for extension first.

If you apply for waiver and take extension afterwards then you might have to again apply for waiver. Better take extension and then apply before you need a change of status.
