J1 Visa->travelgraceperiod -> visa extension process initiated-> do I need to return to home country

Hi Everyone,

I just completed a ACGME accredited prelim position and now I am in the travel grace period of 30 days. Recently I got a job offer for a non-standard training position and the program has initiated the J1 visa process on EVnet (ECFMG) . I am wondering if I still need to leave the United states before the 30 day grace period ends or Can I stay as my visa process is initiated.

Though it may take another 6-8 weeks for me to get the extension DS-2019. Kindly suggest me regarding this issue
