The ds form for a j-1 visa is like a I-20 for an F-1 visa .. It clearly mentions the amount and funds which will be paid to you and it also mentions as to how much it would cost you to support your self in the united states..if your funds are less than the amount it would cost you to live in the U.S , then i would recommend you show the bank balance worth the deficit...
I don't think the visa officer will ask you to show the assests as they feel that accepting a j-1 visa means the candidate is showing a non-immigration intent..
