J1 VISA and asylum questions

Hello,

I came to US in 2001 as a Fulbright student. I have the two years home residency requirement. Currently, i am pursuing a graduate study and i will finish it in May 2010. My wife has J2 visa and she would like to apply for political asylum soon by her own. If she is granted asylee status, will i be able to change my status from J1 to something else? Is their any Fulbright student out there who applied for political asylum and granted? Please, I need your help.

Thank you for your urgent reply. She is not a Fulbright student. She is here with J2 VISA.
