J1 to F1, Help!!!

Hi,
I came in US on a 18 months J1 visa and before it expired I filed for and F1 obviously after I got accepted and obtained an I -20 from school. The problem is that 180 days passed and I did not get any answer from immigration so I calledc them and on feb 3 2007 ( note that I received my receipt for filling on july 7 2006) I received notice of action that asks me to demonstrate that I have the financial means to study and live. The problem is that I went to school all this time I was on pending because the school told me is ok , so obviously I paid for my classes. Now I found out that I was not suppose to go to school without F1 approved and I cannot demonstrate the money that I already paid. So my question would be if anyone knows if its ok to attend school while on pending status and if I can demonstrate with the recepts I paid school. Please let me know if anyone has been in a similar siuation!!! I am desprate!!!
 
1) you have to demonstrate that you have the money for school in the future, not in the past
2) whether it was legal for you to go to school depends on the category of J-1 you were on
 
I was on the 18 months internship J1. Yes I understand that I have to demonstrate the money now but I do not have the same money in the account know since I went to school and I paid my tuition, so my question is if I can demonstrate that I paid for school! It has been 7 months now since Im waiting for my status so of course I do not have the same money I had in the account when I aplied to school....
