J1 - Getting engaged - allowed to stay?

Hi

I'm on a j-1 exchange programme visa and am about to propose to my girlriend (a USC). Trouble is my visa is due to expire in 1 month. Does anyone know whether it is possible for file for an adjustment of status to a k visa? If not is it possible to change to a visitor visa to extend my stay for a couple of months, before returning home and applying for a k-3?

Whichever way, if you are subject to 2 yr home country residency requirement, you have to fulfil it unless you obtain a waiver, this applies even if you marry a US citizen.
