J Visa Denied?

My Lawyer Said, We Shall Submit My J1 Application First, Then When It Is Approved, Submit For My Wife (j-2). Because My Wife's Sister Already Submitted A Residency Application In 2001 As Sister In Behalf My Wife, Therefore Might Compromise The J1 Application If We Submit It Together.
Is That Possible To Apply First For Me Then, For My Wife Without Risking Her Legal Status?

Currently I Have F1 And My Wife F2.
I Deeply Appreciate In Advance For All Of Your Help.

are you applying for a change of status or visas?
if you get J-1, and your wife doesn't get J-2, she won't be able to remain in F-2 status, since you won't be in F-1. Of course, you are risking her F-2 status.
