J-1 needing girlfriend to accompany

Hello,

I was wondering whether anyne might be able to give me a bit of advice.

I have been offered a job in the US and will shortly visit the US embassy in London to get a J-1 visa. I would like my girlfriend to come with me for the duration of my employment (I have a 1 year contract at an american university). I have assumed she should apply for a B1 visa.

Should we apply together at the embassy, and should she give me as the reason for her extended stay (VWP only gets 3 months)? And if so, what are the best supporting documents we should also bring?

I would be very grateful if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks and best wishes,
Nick

Your girlfirend may not LIVE in the US on VWP or B2 visa. Get married and file for a J2, or she can visit you only. If you are unwilling to make this commitment, I guess she cannot come to live in the US.

It will be virtually impossible for your girlfriend to stay for the entire year unless she can get her own independent visa that allows a prolonged stay, such as becoming a student and getting an F visa.

A better option might be for her to make a couple of trips of less than 90 days each on the VWP. This would at least allow you to be together for half a year and shouldn't present any problems as long as there is a reasonable period (ideally more than 90 days) between the two trips. If she did get a visitor visa (which is not automatic by any means) she might be able to do a six month trip followed by a reasonable break and then another couple of months at the end of your posting.
