ITIN & SSN Number Issue

Please Excuse me for posting this non-immigration related query .

My wife had ITIN number for Tax Purpose Previously , now she got her SSN thru GC . Do we have to call IRS to Cancel the ITIN ( may be tie the ITIN to SSN ) . The reason for my post is that , I did my taxes online thru turbo-tax, used wife's SSN instead of ITIN which was used previously to file Taxes, I filed electronically but was rejected with error with some error on secondary (wife's ) prior year gross adjusted income ( same as mine ) .

Only thing that changed from last to this year was wife's SSN do we have to use the ITIN only for Tax.

Any one facing this problem ....

My case is similar

You are fine. Dont need to change anything at INS. Only if you are going to apply for EAD/AP etc you need to give the new SSN.

I think this is a law, once u get SSN u need to notify IRS requesting them to cancel ITIN #. I will suggest go thru IRS regulations on their web site.

To Girish Rajput

My situation is similar.
I have to file 2002 taxes and earlier I used ITIN for my spouse.
Last week we got SSN for my spouse.
Please let me know what and how to inform INS.

Thanks in advance

Where do we need to inform this change ? INS or IRS ? Is it required to provide ITN# at the time of applying for SSN ?

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks

I did not knew that we have to link both ITIN & SSN. I might file tax online with ITIN number ,so that i dont have to wait long for Refund ..

Thank to all of you for replying to this post......

Called IRS

Called IRS (800-829-1040) from the pdf by dusranazar.

She said that I have to file using the new SSN .(even e-file).
Then she asked my state (IL) and asked me to write a note to
IRS at
Internal Revenue Services
Kansas City, MO 64999-0002
It looks like the address depends upon the state you are filing.

This can be done later and I understand that this is for IRS to
link your previous ITIN filings to the SSN.
It seems that there will be no impact on filing the taxes.

If anyone happened to talk to IRS or have more info please update.

Thank you feb140 for bringing this point to our attention and
all others with their valuable suggestions.

I was in the same situation .....

.... and this is what I did.

After getting new SSN, went to local IRS office. Lady asked me to write to IRS at the address on the IRS cover letter that came with the ITIN card. Sent a certified mail to that address and informed them of the change. This was about a couple of months back.

Tried to e-file tax from TurboTax and got the same message as feb140 got that it's been rejected because the adjusted gross income is different. Figured this is because IRS records must be showing last year's income against the ITIN and '0' against SSN. Guess IRS is using this just as a sanity check. So, resubmitted after changing spouse's adjusted gross income to '0'. The federal return has since been accepted. Still waiting for status of state return though!

Hope this helps.

My wife had to go thru exact problem.

To cancel ITIN write a letter to IRS, With copies of ITIN card and new SSN card. (Bensalem, PA address which is provided by GuptaGa above).

My wife got fingerprint appointment immidietly after she got her SSN. So at the time of fingerprinting the officer there updated her new SSN in INS records. You can always walk in and get it updated in any local INS office or you can send a letter to INS thru your lawyer.

If you e-file , it will get rejected because last year your wife used ITIN. So first time you have to take printout and manually send it to IRS.

Went to local IRS office in Lunch time, Lady took the photocopy of my wife's SSN Card , Along with the ITIN number ,did not have the ITIN card along with me , that was fine with her , she filled out form her self so that both ITIN & SSN can be merged, she told me that it will take about 12 weeks to merger both ITIN & SSN

Asked about e-filing with ITIN number ,she said no since my wife has SSN it should be filed with that , also she told to file manually since it will be rejected any way if done online .

I am thinking to file it online as "when? " did make the Gross Amount field Zero for Spouse. But will this not create problem for next year ..

Learnt a new lesson about ITIN & SSN

Thanks all
Umesh

Why would this be a problem next year?

Next year you can use the SSN and this year's adjusted gross income. This would match with IRS records and there must not be any further issues.

I am not sure though if IRS will ask for more information this year eventhough my return was accepted electronically.

Did u receive any acknowledgment from IRS in response to your information for change, I informed IRS about 2 months back but did not receive any response from them.

Thanks

hope this is fine..

I am going to file 2002 tax returns with my wife's ITIN and then am going to apply for her new SSN. So that there wont be any confusion :) .

Do you guys know the link for the name change after GC approval? please help me out.

I don't have any problem

Friends,

Mine is same situation. but my wife worked for some time so the taxes reported to her SSN. After getting her EAD we have applied t oget SSN. We never informed to IRS about new SSN.but my wife worked for some time so the taxes reported to her SSN we used to file jointly with her ITIN and my SSN. This time we filed electronically with both SSN's but they did accept it. No problem at all

SSN overwrites ITIN

Guys Relax

I had been to the local IRS and mentioned that my wife had the ITIN and also the SSN, they just said you don't have to worry about anything, the SSN superseeds the ITIN, what this means is that the SSN will take over ITIN and more over the person at IRS was ready to shread my wife's ITIN number saying that its no more vaild since she's got a valid SSN number for her self.

Hope this helps some confusion thats going on in this thread.

Thanks
