I talked with friend recently. He was granted asylum in 93, filed I-485 in 94, they called them on interview in an year, said that they will call him for stamping by mail and finally this summer he got his green card - 7 years since he applied! BTW, they did call him for fingerprinting every year. His advice to me - try not to think about it and wait.

Thanks for the valuable piece of information annv. 7 years make sense under the current quota system. If anyone claims they got their GC in 2-3 years etc they are probly either Refugee or a small percentage of asylees who are exempt from the 10k quota.
I\'d still like to urge my fellow asylees to keep writing to the politicians. I personally believe it\'s unfair for asylees when it takes 2-3 years for EB or Refugee GCs whereas ours take 7yrs.
And try not to get too depressed about this issue. Look on the bright side of things. We can still get the unrestricted SS card, RTD (although it limits us from travelling to certain countries), same DHHS assistance as refugees receive...etc.
I still wish that INS would make a firm statement on whether it is required for us to renew our EADs on annual basis. If not for employment purposes or for anyother reason.

When I asked my Interview IO at the I-485 interview how much longer I need to wait until I-485 stamping she told me she cannot give me a time frame (not even an estimate or a guess) because laws change from time to time. I had a feeling that there is probably a policy within the INS not to give gusses and gut feeling answers. I did notice though that IIO was trying very hard to be politically correct during the interview (of course, the whole interview was being video taped on site.)
She did mention that I will receive a finger print notice letter every year until I finally get my I-485 approval.

This guy got his Green card a few months ago
I just talked to a person who had applied for his Green card in June-97. He got his Green card a few months (2-3) ago. He told me that the Green card mentions that it was issued to an asylee. I will talk to him in detail and post whatever information I can find from him on this forum. If you guys have any specific questions, let me know.

Alanpero, I finally got to talk to this guys (he had been on vacation). This is what he told me:

The documents they asked for at the interview were his passport(which was expired), birth certificate (which he didn\'t have and had to get from his home country)
They asked him if he had gone out of the country while in the asylee status. He had not gone out of the country since he was granted asylum.I asked him if he had to produce his tax returns but he said that he did not. Good luck.

It was my understanding, that people who filed originally in their local office (as my friend) had to wait 2 more years, because of the law change. But it is strange that June 1997 was called in Feb 2000 and Sep 1997 - Feb 2001.
I filed in Sep 1998 and still waiting. Is it possible, that 3 months make such a big difference.

Have I ever been arrested (put into jail) by the lawenforcement in the US?
Did I go out of the US since I was granted asylum?
Then the IO made me fill out some sort of affadavit that ask questions like "Am I a war criminal?" "Did I ever join the German Nazi Party?" "Am I a member of any communist organization?" "Do I intend to practise polygamy in the US? blah blah... I think Gilbert or Alanpero can tell the form number. If not I\'ll look it up in the INS forms later.
Then she told me they cannot stamp my I-485 approval today because of the 10k quota. She told me to continue waiting until I get a letter from the INS to come in for stamping. Also that I will get a fp notice letter every year etc. She also DID mention that this interview is the only interview in my I-485 case. But who knows...laws change every now and then. I am not clear about travel out of USA question.
I travelled couple time by business and for vacation on my RTD. I thought that as long as I don\'t go to my country of the orgin and do not ask residence anywhere else it\'s OK. Does that mean that I am in trouble?

I am New To This Board. Thanks To Alanpero & Gilbert For Posting All Those Useful Info On The Board.Just Thought You Might like To know. Recieved A letter In The Mail Yesterday Informing Me That I have Recieved My Permanent Residence.

There Wasn\'t Any Questions Asked During The Interview. All They Wanted To see Was The Current Employment Letter And Any Tax Returns. The Interviewer Just Glanced Thru Them And Gave Us A Standard Note That Said " We Will Let You Know Regarding The Decision.The PR Letter That I recieved Basically Says If I Am Travelling Or Need Proof For Employment Just Take The Original Letter To A Building( where I guess they stamp your passport)B/w Such And Such Time On Any Working Day And They Will Stamp It. But Otherwise That Letter Is As good As The Stamp Until I recieve The Actual Card.
