is visa stamping necessary?

hi everybody...
i came to US on j2 visa on Feb 2003.... my passport stamp was valid upto feb 2005. meanwhile i got H1 visa which is valid upto Dec 2005, but i dint travel outside US , so i dont have it stamped on passport.
Now my employer filed for H1 extension & i dont have any plans to go to india . my question is it required to stamp my passport ?
or its not neccessary if i have valid visa & dont leave US?

I dont have any idea about visa rules.... so any help will be really appreciated.

You don't need to have a valid visa stamp in your passport as long as you have a valid visa. You need it only when you want to travel outside of the country. In case of an emergency and you have to go to India, it will get difficult because there is a six month wait time for visa stamping. (atleast in chennai consulate)
