Is the Economy improving? - Comments

Thinking about it:

Chances of we loosing favor at the age of 35 are very high - if we continue just doing coding job and don't start involving in Business e.g. communicating with customers, bringing in new ideas - or yet higher learn managing techies...

Reasons?

Between 25-30 you still have energy and free time to learn new technologies coming out every other day..

At 35 - probably you willl still have energy but time may be taken away by family issues.

Obviously our competitor then will be a fresher..

Should we say SOS?

What are your observations in your companies/industry? I see only people around 30 in development and testing field.. where are others? Sure enough industry is old enough to have 35 to 40 year olds doing something - even on this board??

I think we need some more business ideas here....

"believe_in_self " makes a good point. If we continue to work in the field of Software Development we are sure to loose our edge as we age. Programming has traditionally been the field of "Young and the restless". It requires a desire to continuously learn and the ability to work dog hours the motivation for which dwindles down with passing years.

To reflect on what was said I was also wondering that why is that we do not see many Indians over 35-40 working in IT field?
The answer is that they have moved on to better prospects after settling down with thier GCs and buying their houses.

So what are these business ideas? Apart from the traditional "Buy your store" model. Inviting as that may seem, somehow it does not appeal to me much. I would like to utilize my investment of time and money in the IT field and use that knowledge in some business venture.

I have ideas but I do not have business plans?

I have motivation but I do not have the courage to leave my stable job?

Somehow something holds me back to start anything before the GC process is complete (now that can take a while)

So what options do we have? Lets talk about all the possible business ideas. Has anybody ever explored the market of export/import? Any success/failure stories?

Guys:

Not to forget. In the coming years, none of the coding work will be in US. The only guys hanging round in the I.T. here in US would be those 'fat-check' managers. Thats the bottom line. My sincere advice: Make as much of money as you can when you have your job .

Don't panic. Only 1 in 10 IT jobs will be exported in the next 10 years, and majority of them are lower level support and maintenance job. My counsin's start up company hired 20 indians to develop a product and after two years they hired 5 engineers in the valley to redo the whole thing. --- It is hard to say if this really will save companies money or not yet. Number looks good but will it work out eventually??

I think if we keep learning new skills we will be fine for at least 10 more years -- software engineering are the fastest growing jobs in the next 10 years projected by DOL.

The only problem is: IT may not be as well paid ten years from now.

Is Finance and IT as a combination a lasting skill set? Like financial engineering? -- this requires a lot of math skills and not everybody who got a certificate can do it. I will appreciate inputs on this.
