Is physical presence required while applying

all,
is it necessary to be present within the country throughout the entire process of naturalization ?
In other words can an individual apply for citizenship and subsequently work in a foreign country and keep visiting the U.S and checking on the status of the application ? The stay outside the U.S will be less than 6 months at all times. Would there be any problems with this ? Would the INS officer doubt my intentions of securing citizenship ?
thanks,

Hi sshaligr,

At my previous interview in 1997 my application was rejected. This was because I was studying in India at the time, and even though my trips back and forth were less than 6 months, I did not show sufficient TIES to the United States...

So I think it's definitely at the discretion of the interviewing officer to look at someone who travels a lot and possibly reject the application...

You can take small trips, but you should really maintain an overall permanent presence in the US (in your district) during your application process...
