Is Passport Stamping needed (once approved)?

Hi,
I had a question related to passport stamping once the I-485 application is approved. Is it necessary to get the passport stamping done? Is it needed to get the card ordered? Has anybody received the card without getting the passport stamped?
Any experieces or expert opinions?

Yes it is. When you go for stamping you are fingerprinted again and that fingerprint appears on the actual card. Minor children need not go for stamping since their cards do not have fingerprints.
Until the card arrives, the temporary stamp in your passport is the only legal proof of your status.
