Is Passport necessary for fingerprinting/biometrics?

Hello,
My family based greencard case is pending for a long time. I've been called for fingerprinting again. I don't have possession of my passport because I applied for UK visa by mail. So my question is - will they accept a driver's license (a US state) as ID for taking biometrics or is a passport an absolute must??

Thanks in advance.

my wife in same boat, i had to send her passport off for something else. all she has in her canadian DL. or nexus. or birth cert. im sure one of those will do.

In fact when I went to the ASC, they were pretty surprised when I presented my passport as ID. They had to keep it in their possession for 10 minutes or so, while they were processing my FPs and taking my picture. They said, are you sure you want us to hold on to the passport? (As if it were made of gold.) They said a DL would have been just fine.
