Hi,
I have read the posts and understand that you can only be a passive investor in a company based in U.S.A while on H1. But can I do online business by starting a company in India and appointing someone to manage it from there. The business targets international customers including U.S.A.

Thanx,
Debi

Thank you for the reply. I need a clarification. I'll be paying my taxes in India for whatever returns I get out of this business. Does U.S have double taxation - do I have to pay tax here too? What if I do this after getting my EAD, is there any difference in taxes.

On your tax return, you will be asked for all your Internationla Income too. How they are taxed is a question for a CPA. But with this arrangement, you will be atleast be able to run your business and thereby a second income. But one thing I would definately not do is try to play with IRS.

Thank you for all the replies. I've been checking the tax treaties, but since I'm not very good at deciphering all the technical terminologies finding it difficult. :( Does anyone know about a good tax discussion forum?
I don't want to avoid tax, but want to check which option is better - basing it off India or U.S. And I certainly don't want to pay double tax. India doesn't tax income earned in U.S, so wondering if basing it in U.S might be a better idea.

Being in the same kind of situation as u r. I think better option is have indian company on one of your relative (mom, dad etc) who is not working. That way its very easy.
