Is it OK to renew my son's TD a few days after expiration?

My son's TD status (Canadian citizen) will be expiring this Sunday. I got my TN renewed for another 3 years at the border last week. Is there some leeway when it comes to renewing my son's TD /I-94 a few days after expiration or should we be driving to the border this weekend?

There is leeway. You are fine going sometime before the new year.
