Is it even possible to get a state ID?

Hello there

When I entered USA last summer I had a J1 visa with working permission. During summer I received my social security number without any problems. Before my J1 expired I applied for B2 tourist status and finally got it in December.

As I travel a lot around North, East of the Stated, I would love to get a State ID, so I won't have to carry my passport with I-94 from around everywhere (my friend's wallet with her documents was stolen and now I feel really nervous about mine too).

So, I figured out I can get State ID which I could have easily got during summer, in NYC, but now without valid DS form it seems impossible in some states. So, right now I stay in Chicago and would really appreciate if someone could say in what states my B1/B2 status is eligible for getting a State ID. As I already mentioned, I travel and thus it makes me quite flexible. And I can't reach DMV in Chicago by phone if you are wondering.

You more than likely could not obtain a state ID. That being said, you also have to be aware that you are required to have your I-94 in your possession at all times. This is the only document that shows you are in the country legally and it is required to be presented upon demand.
