Is H1 Extension Stamping required ?

The visa on my passport has expired for more then one year now. The I94 on my passport has also expired for more than one year.

I have the extension for another 3 years and received the approval notice I129 and I94.

The same is the case for my wife and my son (H4).

I want to travel to India but not sure if I need to go to Mumbai consulate (drop box) and get the extionsion stamped on our passport. It will cost me $500 which I want to save if stamping is not required by law. Do I need to worry about stamping at all ????
Is it required at POE ?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

It is always advisable to get the visa stamp.
However you can enter using the new approvals and old expired visa stamps. But you need a good reason why you did not get the stamp because you cannot receive the stamp in US anymore (> 1 yr), in case the POE inspector asks that question.

BTW the I94 has not expired. The new I94 that came along with H1/H4 approval is your current I94.
