Folks,

I see there is a huge confusion for those going the Consular Processing way.
They have to obtain police clearance certificate from the Indian Embassy/Pasport Office/
Police etc etc.

Is the 485 path free of these (harassing) Indian stuff ? Or, is the same as CP but just
a worse and lengthy way.

Please execuse my frustration.

Incorrect for Consular Processing - That changed last week :)

Things change fast now. On December 14, 2001 the Consulate General in India issued the following:

As of January 1, 2002, ALL immigrant visa applicants over age 16 MUST present Indian Police Certificates. Two certificates must be obtained as follows: 1) a certificate from your local police station; 2) a certificate from your Regional Passport Office.

Updated 12/14/01: Important Notice to Immigrant Visa Applicants in India

AILA has reported that beginning from January 1, 2002, all the immigrant visa applicants over 16 years of age must submit "two" Indian Certificates, one from the local police station, and the other from the Regional Passport Office of your jurisdiction. Very important.
The certificates are required only in the consular processing and not required in the INS 485 adjustment of status proceeding.
