I got my IV via CP route. I have done POE and got I551 stamped which is valid for a year. I have to go to india for an urgent work for 3-4 weeks.

is there any documentation which needs to be done before i leave US?

is this I551 good for returning to US?

will the immigration people in india honor I551? specially as it says that "A xxxxx processed for i551. temporary evidence for lawful admission for permanent resydence valid until mm/dd/yy. employment authorised"

early reply will be highly appreciated

You can use the temporary stamp to travel. Almost all the countries know about this stamp including India. It has the same value as the actual card.

I have travelled to India using I-551 stamp. Though people at Indian customs are not very familiar with the stamp, no problem yet.

Take care of any transit visa's if you are going through European countries.

thanks for the info guys..

one more thing, do i need to file re-entry permit before leaving US? as far as i know, one has to file for re-entry permit, only if he/she is going for more than a year..is that right and still hold good?

thanks

Yes, you need the airport transit visa for France. I'll be travelling to India via Paris in december on 551. Spoke to French Embassy in DC and was told unless you have the actual card, you will need the visa as there is no way for Frenc Immigration to verify the A# and the stamp. Hope this helps.

I was just wondering if any1 here has travelled to Pakistan (specifically Lahore) and back on the I-551 stamp. I wonder if Pakistani immigration officials will treat this as valid. Last time I travelled to Lahore (post 9/11) they were minutely scrutinizing everybody travelling to US.

I had finally recieved my GC on 11/22, however due to an admin error I had to file an I-90 and they kept my GC with error. I am planning to travel to Lahore in Feb/Mar 2005 timeframe and would appreciate help from any1 who has experience here.
