IRS Transcripts

I just called IRS and requested Tax account transcripts for last 5 years. The operator told me that the account transcripts are only available for the current year and 3 prior years.

Any suggestions about how to get for 5th year(2004).

Thanks

I got Account Transcripts from 2003 to 2005 and Tax Transcripts from 2006 to 2007 by walking into my local IRS office. This was in the middle of April this year.

They asked me for my drivers license and SSN card, and I had to wait for about 45 minutes. It was free.

I wasn't so lucky with the 5 years, received the usual 3 years transcripts free, had to pay to go back further, $57.00 per tax year requested.

Do I need to get tax transcripts for me and my wife separately?
We have filed all our tax returns jointly.
Will getting one set (and make another copy) be OK?

Thanks

I asked for 2 copies when I visited the IRS office and explained that one copy was for my wife. The nice lady obliged with no further questions asked.

I walked into my local IRS office today and asked for Account transcripts from 2003 to 2008 (so six years in total). The officer asked if it was Account or Return transcripts and for what purpose. I said I need Account transcripts to show in my Natz interview that all dues are clear. He printed all 6 of them, no questions asked. Maybe it depends on the local office too. Also I think the last 3 years rule only applies to return transcripts.

Folks,
Two questions:
1. How many years of tax records is needed? 5 year back? or 3 year back?
2. Do we need to present our actual Social Security Card? I don't think I have mine anymore. If so, do I need to go to SS office to get it?

cheers,

1. You are not required to present your tax transcripts unless you are applying based on marrige to a US citizen or unless an IO specifically requests that you show your tax transcripts. That being said, you are applying based on marriage, the last three years is sufficient.
2. You may need to present your SS card. Therefore, if you do not have one, you need to go to the SSA office and request a replacement card.
