Inviting someone

Hello everyone,

I have been trying to find a way to meet my probably future daughter-in-law who lives in the Philippines. I have Stage III-C Ovarian cancer and can not travel anytime soon. It has been difficult for me, but I am fighting. My concern is, can I invite my son's girlfriend to visit me here in the US so I can meet her. I am an American citizen, but my son is still an immigrant and will qualify for citizenship by august of next year. I am feeling a lot better now after the chemo treatments, but I am not allowed to travel. Maybe not for 2-3 more years.

Will a letter to the embassy asking her to visit me for a month be enough? Or does she have to just go to the embassy and hope they approve her visa?
I just want to meet her and see if she really is good enough for my son. If you're a mother, then you'll understand. She does seem quite delightful over the phone.

I'm glad I found this forum. I will read some more. I haven't searched for any answers here yet, but will do so now.

Thank you in advance.

You can certainly issue her an invitation to visit, but her serious relationship with your son makes her appear as a potential immigrant which is contrary to the B2 visa intent.

You might consider speaking with the immigration assistant at your senator's or representative's office to see if they can assist you in facilitating the visa on a compassionate basis before she attends for an interview; it would be easier not to have to overcome a denial than to wait and try to have as much supporting documents ready for the first application. If you feel confortable discussing this with your oncologist and think they might write a letter on you behalf, it is certainly something to consider incuding with your invitation.

May I suggest that when you are able to travel, that you all meet in a third country where both you and she are able to obtain a visit visas if she is unable to get one to visit the US.

Thank you for your reply. I thought no one would. That's certainly better news than what I was expecting. I'll try to see if I can get in touch with the local officials here. :)
