Interview Success now what ? [ DV Lottery 2010 winner]

Hi All,
I have just completed my DV Lottery interview this morning, have been asked to collect my passport tomorrow .
I thought of going to the USA next month for 1 1/2 month- 2 months, in order for me to receive my SSN and the return back to my home country Singapore for 6 months to complete my last semester of studies before leaving for good to the USA by end of 2010 .
Im worried of the following, do advise me
1) Can I visit USA by next month or should I wait couple more months ?
2) What happens at the point of entry at the airport in US, is there an interview ?
3) Do I still have to get a tourist visa to travel to US ?
4) How long do I have to be in US to get my SSN ?
5) Is it safe [legally] for me to return to my home country after receiving the SSN and come back for good by end of 2010 ?
6) Does the length of stay in US matter?
7) When do I receive my Green Card [ID] and what do I need to do upon arrival in order to get it ? Are there any forms to be filled up ?

Thank You all ..Im really lost :( and would appreciate your opinions.

You can enter and leave whenever you want. But if I were you I would wait till I have the GC and the SSN, after all you have done so much to get them and don't want to risk them getting lost.

If you stay away from the US for months it will only delay your application to become a citizen...but than not every one wants to become a citizen.

I know people from Poland who won over 10 yrs ago and have received a letter more than once asking if they want to become citizens but they won't but lived here all this time.

One thing, you probably will get your GC, but don't buy your ticket to soon...first wait till you have the approval.

Good Luck:)

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum :) I'm a lottery winner from France.

Regarding your questions, I'll try to help as much as I can:

1) From what I understood, you can go anytime, as long as your visa is valid (ie. 6 months from the time you got your interview at the US embassy). Then, after you got your effective green card, you can't be out of the United States for more than a year without asking for a re-entry permit.
2) I dont think there's gonna be any formal interview, just a classic check-up by an immigration officer. A couple of basic questions, and you should be free to go.
3) Nope, the visa stamped in your passport is there for that.
4) I dont know exactly, it should be a few weeks.
5) Like I said earlier on, you're clean as long as long as you dont stay out of the territory for more than a year without having the right permit. After all, it's a residency.
6) Well, yes, your residency can be revoked if you stay out of the United States for too long.
7) It should be sent a few weeks after your arrival, to the address you gave.

By the way, congrats on your successful interview! I hope mine's gonna go that smoothly.

Hey kiefar,

Thank You for your respond. It is very informative.I have another question

When I do return to the US in 2010 after my studies, Correct me if my wrong I would not need any visa any more from the embassy as I would have my GC id to purchase an airline ticket?

Wish you all the best for your interview.

I was only asked 4 questions as below:

What is your name ?
Do you have anybody in US that you know ?
What do they do there ?
How do your parents feel about you going to US ?
Maybe they ask me this coz Im the only kid .....just guessing

when you get your GC you will never require any kind of visa anymore. You only need to buy return tickets.Your question is as good as asking if you need a visa to enter your country of origin incase you are leaving the States to visit your country of origin?Of course you wont.
Whats your age?

Hi gasper2000,
Thanks for your response.
Im only 19.

you welcome. To be elaborate, you need a visa to purchase ticket to travel to other countries like france,Germany etc from the states. But you dont need a visa to buy ticket to visit you home country or to return to the US from any country. You only need to show your GC.

That is not true! When you have a GC you don't need a retour ticket at all...you are free to stay or leave...unless you stay out of the country too long and risk that your GC will be voided.

Not all visa's require a retour ticket. We have been in the USA for years at first without having retour tickets...since we had visa's for longer periods...even when we had them for 1 yr. we never needed a retour ticket.

I was thinking to do the same thing as I'm still in university and I have a Thesis to do. I was told that at the interview I can ask to receive my visa at a later date. My problem is that I can't take the original copy of my HS diploma to the interview because it's kept at the University until I graduate and they don't want to give it back to me until I finish or cancel my education there. Since I'll not cancel my education at it's end I might give up on DV2010.

I never heard a University?College keeping a original of a HS diploma....I wonder if USCIS will buy that story...

The school need a original transcript...but not the diploma....are you sure you wrote how it is....?

Yes I'm sure. Here in Bulgaria, almost all Universities are public and supported by the government. If you get accepted in public university you start studing supported by the government. Private universities don't want to keep your diploma but public ones keeps it until you gradute. I think this is to prevent you to study at two public universities at the same time. There was even a scandal last month when a student was ask to pay 800$ to receive his HS diploma despite the fact that he has decided to cancel his studies. I'll go to my High School and tell them I have lost my diploma but I think the new one would have a sing "Dublicate" on it. Hope this won't be a big problem.

Didn't you make at least a copy of it? It'd be a bummer to give up on such an opportunity just for that.

I have lived most of my life in Europe in a socialist country with public schools and never heard about what you describe...I wonder if CP or USCIS will buy it, but than again....they probably have 80,000 people still waiting.....

Many of my family members have gone to University and o one ever had to give an original diploma to a public school...always a copy. Maybe at one point they had to produce the original and they make a copy for their files...

Ofcourse I have a copy. But I think they want the original one to see at the interview. I'll ask at university to sing it and put a stamp with something like: "True with original". I've written an email to the embassy here because they must have had similar cases. But there is no answer yet.

PS: Am also working as a programmer since 3 years - 4 hours per day but in the National Social Security Institute they counted 4 hours for 1 working day. So I might be able to use the work experience clause if they don't accept the copy of my diploma.

PSPS: I talked to students department again and they say they can give me my diploma for a few days. I only have to fill a request form. So everything seems alright :)
