Hi,

Here is a summary of my recent citizenship interview experience.

My interview was scheduled for around 8.30 A.M. I got there at about 7.35 A.M. (Newark, NJ). There is parking available close by (think it is McKinney or Walnut street). There were about 10 people ahead of me in the line outside. The queue is for security check and I guess one reason for some crowd at times is that special registration is going on. I reached the interview waiting room after the security check and after being checked for identification (driver’s license and the interview letter etc.). On entering the waiting room, I dropped off the interview schedule letter at the window. There were about 10 people in the room.

People were called and taken inside the interview rooms by various INS officers. I was called in at about 8.45 A.M. Basically the interview consisted of a review of the questions in the N400 application almost line by line (if anything had changed from the time of application, the officer noted it in the application – such as employer, trips abroad since the time of application etc.). She also checked the green card and driver’s license. Test in the form verbal response to 10 questions was conducted as well as writing down a sentence that she gave. After that there were a few papers to sign. The interview was conducted in a business like and pleasant manner. The officer only asked for material that the notification letter mentioned I should bring.

After successful completion of the above, the officer informed me that I have passed all the requirements. She said oath is administered at about 4 P.M and that I could come back at around 3 P.M. I was out of the interview room shortly after 9 A.M.

I left the building since I had a long gap and a few errands that I could take care of during the day. I came back at 3 P.M to the waiting room. This time the room was full. People were called in succession to the various windows in the room. It is at this time one surrenders the green card and signs the naturalization certificate. At about 4 P.M, the oath was administered. Some guidelines about how to apply for passports etc. was also provided. Following that, individuals were called and provided their naturalization certificates. The ceremony was over by 4.20 P.M.

That was it. Trust this summary helps those who are waiting for the interview. Wish you good luck.

One question.

Did they ask anything about your time outside US (If you had any) and also did they ask for any proof for 3 months in state residency requirement.

Thanks.

everything seems going smouth its a good sign

just some question :
beside your g-c and driver licence ,did you brought any other document ?? (taxes ,copies of traveling ticket overseas,....).
when going threw you n 400 application did he \she asked anyprove like driving record ,if you didn't mention it before ?

thanks in advance

one more question :
were you asked anything about your mariage ?since we had talked about it in previous thread
thanks again

Thanks for all the wishes. I will try to answer all the questions in one go:

They did not ask me for any extra documents (tax returns, driving records, etc.). Mine was a somewhat straight forward case based on 5plus years of stay in the U.S. after green card. So some of the other documents that may be possibly applicable to other cases were not needed in my case (e.g.: marriage certificate, in case you are applying based on your spouse's citizenship). I had all the extra documents ready any way just in case, but was not asked to show them. My advise is that make sure that you have everything that is applicable to your case as mentioned in the interview letter . Anything in addition to that is good to have just in case. Like I said my experience is that, they were looking only for relevant material.

I had traveled overseas only for short durations mostly for business during the period asked. I had listed all the trips in the application. I was asked if I had traveled subsequent to the filing of my application. In my case I had two trips after filing the application. I mentioned those. The officer verified these by looking through my passport and noted them in the application.

Regarding questions on marriage, taxes etc., these are covered in n400 application itself. When they review the application, they do ask you to confirm the answers verbally (such as "What is your address..?" "How many times have you been married?", "How many kids do you have?", "Have you filed your taxes?" etc.) You are under oath during the interview and must reply truthfully. I suspect if they have any doubt in any aspect, they may ask for additional proof pertaining to that issue.

As for my time time line - I had filed my application mid-march 2002, was finger printed around July-August, received notification of the interview in early November. The interview took place a couple of days ago.
