Background: H1 married to USC
Our interview was 2pm at Baltimore. Got there 1:30pm. Handed in Interview Notice and found a seat in the waiting room. The room was very crowded.
About 2:30pm, my name was called. My interviewer is a guy in mid-30s. He pronouced my last name wrong(my husband has a very unusual lastname). So I told the right pronunciation while we walking to his room.
Got in his office. We put the stroller on one side of the room while my husband and I took the seat in front of the officer's desk.
He asked for my passport, Maryland ID and EAD. I presented all three documents. He then asked for my husband's driver license. The address on his ID is still the old one(his other house). I asked him to change to our current house but he didn't want to. The officer spent a few minutes on this issue, but then he let it go.
He then asked my husband my mom's name. (We did practice this but my mom's firstname is too hard for me. ) My husband just told him it's too hard. Then I said you do remember my mom's lastname, my husband said the lastname right away. He then asked my husband my dad's name. My husband said it didn't come cross his mind, because my dad died 10 years. He then turned to me asking my parents' name, kinda funny, I told him the names.
Then it's my turn, he asked what is my husband's birthday, I told him the date, he was waiting for the year, I said the wrong year! I couldn't believe it. I guess even I thought I wouldn't be nervous becoz our marriage is real. That whole environment did something on me. So, the lesson is, it will never hurt to go over information before the interview. To make myself look better, I told him my husband was adopted and the years were messed up. My husband then told him the story that his brother told him his birthday is not the date on his birth certificate when he's 18 years old. That makes my mistake look not that bad
He then asked what's your husband's full name. I got this one right
He didn't ask me questions of my in-laws.
The next question was have you ever commited crime that are not being arrested in or out of the US? I said I was never arrested. He laughed, that's my question. I was a bit embarrased... then I said I never commited any crime anyhwere.
He asked another two questions on the 485 list.
He did asked for my husband's 2005 tax return, but I forgot it. When we filed in March, my husband hadn't got tax done yet. He paused for a few seconds, then said I can use the 2004 one. He is very nice.
Then he asked for joint documents, I gave him our joint health insurance, car insurance, my husband as beneficiary of my life insurance policy. He asked if we have any utility bills that with both of names on it. We said no. As water, electricity is under my name, my husband is taking care of directv bill. (The matter of fact is I bought the house before we got married, so his name is not even on the house. Of course I didn't volunteer this information
) He let it go.
As we brought the baby, he asked for name and then added her name and birthdate to I-130. I explained to him the baby wasn't born when I filed. He said he understands. I showed him baby's birth certificate.
He asked to see original marriage license. But he didn't ask for my husband's birth certificate.
In the end he asked if my husband is the father of the baby.
I guess becoz we got married 3/1 and had the baby 4/27. My husband jumped up and said yes. He later complained to me what kind of question it is.
(We did a civil wedding in a court house and are pushing back reception to next year.)
I also gave him x-ray result for I693 as the one I submitted isn't complete. At that time I couldn't do x-ray due to pregnancy. He said it's good you give it to me, as the doctor forgot to write a note on the form. I joked maybe I shouldn't have mentioned. He smiled and said it won't work becoz the information is missing and it will affect the overall approval.
The only issue is that I don't have a birth certificate(my country didn't issue such document when I was born). I used passport as secondary document but he said no. I wonder why I didn't get an RFE for that. He said I could get a notary one from my own country. He said everything looks good but the birth certificate. He said what he can do is to approve 130 right now, which is the base of 485. Once I mailed birth certificate in with my A#, 485 will be processed.
My husband asked if he can stamp my passport, he said if birth certificate is not in, it won't approved. Besides, Baltimore office has stopped stamping passport, they don't even have stamp in office.
Overall he is very nice. My husband and I tried to have small conversations here and there, so the interview is more like chatting than serious interview.
Oh, I did volunteer photo album(friends, wedding, family, baby...). He went through it real quick. Commented on baby pictures my photographer friend took. No question at all.
That's it. Now I need to work on my birth certificate and then get my GC. Thank you all for your help and the information you shared with me.
