Interview Documents

Hi Folks,

Probably this question has been asked million times, but I could not find the answers I am looking for, so please be patient with me

1.Joint Health Insurance proof.
How and where do I get that? I called the Blue Cross Blue Shield (my employer insurance), they said they do not provide any proof of coverage, other than the ID cards. But, I do not get an ID card in my wife's name. So, how do you prove that she is on my insurance

2. Retirement Beneficiary proof.
For example, for the employer provided 401K or 403(b) plans. I called the company which manages our employer 401K, they said they do not provide a document as such which says that my wife is 100% beneficiary

3. Life Insurance
Samething as above. My company by default provides Life Insurance coverage of double the pay. So how do I get beneficiary information for this

4.Tax documents
I filed my taxes for the last several years through TurboTax. So can I take these print outs to the interview

I could call my HR and find out about these. But, I want to know if there is any standard documents USCIS expects

Thanks a lot

In terms of the tax documents, contact the IRS and request a tax transcript. They are available at no charge and it proves that the taxes where filed and accepted by the IRS. If you want a transcripts of the W-2's and 1099's then you will have to make it know you want that also.

wow thanks.. Now this worries me. I have barely two weeks for the interview... I am not sure I can get the documents from IRS that quickly.

Does all of you take IRS transcripts only?

When I called the IRS and spoke with a agent to request my W-2 and 1099 transcript, he asked if I had a fax machine. He said if I did he would of faxed it.

The IRS website says my local Taxpayer Assistance Center provides copies of tax returns and tax transcripts. I don't know if they are printed on the spot or are mailed to you. I went to the IRS website, then contact us in the upper right, then Contact Your Local IRS Office. The best bet is to give them a call, and ask.

Yup I just called them. They said if I am physically at the Fax machine, they can fax it right at that time.

I will call them again tomorrow, when I am near the fax machine..

Thank you Dhlunar.

Hope someone could answer my other two questions :)

No problem.

I haven't had our interview yet, but I included tax transcripts with my I-864 when we applied. I consider it to be better to send the transcript, because it is from the IRS so it shows proof that I actually filed, plus any adjustments that they had to make, instead of just filling out a 1040. Plus my tax return information for 2008 is in a box somewhere with a bunch of other papers.

I went for my interview about 3 weeks ago. We had separate insurance cards (so we didnt have that); we are both employed by state universities, so getting retirement/benefit statements was nearly impossible in a month, so we didnt have that either.

Here is what I took for showing joint holding/living together:

1. Copies of filed tax documents (you don't need tax transcripts..I think they are overkill, if you have kept copies of your previous tax filings): We have filed jointly for the last 6 years, so I took the federal tax filing copies for those 6 years. I have requested them before (for other purposes) and they are relatively easy to get, but it doesn't mean much.

2. Vehicle registration (which was in both our names), Vehicle insurance cards (joint)

3. The important thing is: Joint financial holdings (bank accounts, credit cards, savings bank accounts, CD's if any..etc.), bank statements: anything that has both of you on it. Safe deposit box (we had one), etc.

4. Lease/mortgage

5. Pictures (take a few, we took about 25; again, I think it was way too many)

6. Joint cell phone plans (if any)

7. We had the birth certificate of our daughter

8. Drivers license with both of us at the same address; Utility bills (some were in my name, some were in my wife's, showing that we were living at the same place). We had utility bills spread over a 4 year period.

The IO did not ask even one of these documents (NOT a single one), but it is good to be prepared. Again, if the IO cant be convinced by these many documents that you live together/are married, then it is unlikely that 2 more documents (whatever that maybe) could change his/her mind..Good luck!

I forgot to mention, if you call your insurance agency, they should be able to give you who are on your insurance policy account. i.e., if your wife is on your insurance.

It would also be useful to get a statement from your bank (they will print it out and give you) about how long you have had an account(s) there. Don't fret too much, you should be prepared with everything that you can get but you dont have to overdo it. You will be fine...Good luck..

How about online bills? We get our telephone bill online, so can I just print a copy of the bill off the telephone company website?

Also, you mention with drivers license having the same address, do they care about the issue date? I am asking because my wife got her Maryland DL about a month after we moved here and I did too. However, my current job requires me to have a CDL so I passed my CDL road test and got an updated license a week after we got married. My issue date on my current license is in the middle of 2009.

Each of you should have ID Cards in your name...Primary Card Holder and Secondary Card Holder. Or go to the website and print out a statement - that statement should have both of your names (i.e. if your wife is covered).

2. Retirement Beneficiary proof.
For example, for the employer provided 401K or 403(b) plans. I called the company which manages our employer 401K, they said they do not provide a document as such which says that my wife is 100% beneficiary

You can again go to the 401K website and print out a the screen shot where your wife is listed as beneficiary (i.e. if you have listed your wife as beneficiary it will show up)

3. Life Insurance
Samething as above. My company by default provides Life Insurance coverage of double the pay. So how do I get beneficiary information for this

Again, please go to the life insurance website and check your profile where beneficiary information is shown.

4.Tax documents
I filed my taxes for the last several years through TurboTax. So can I take these print outs to the interview

You sure can take the TurboTax printouts. For my documents, I called IRS (1-800-829-1040) and they faxed me the documents (tax transcript) in 5 mins. Please mention to them all the tax years (i.e. 2006, 2007, 2008) transcripts which you would need.

I could call my HR and find out about these. But, I want to know if there is any standard documents USCIS expects

All the above information is standard and can be got from the website i.e. life insurance, health insurance and retirement accounts. I have interview on 21st and I am carrying all the above mentioned documents.

I walked in with my SSN card and DL to the local IRS office and asked for Tax transcripts for last five years. After an hour long wait one of the representatives printed all what needed. I think this approach is better then waiting 4 weeks for IRS to mail all this out.

Yes, absolutely. I did the same thing with my cell phone bills and cell phone records.

Also, you mention with drivers license having the same address, do they care about the issue date?

I dont think so. The main point is co-habitation proof (through financial records, leases/mortgages, etc.)
