interview coming but lost passport

Hi,

My brother just finished finger print two months ago and waiting for interview but he could not find his passport.

Does anyone know that if one needs to bring passport along for interview?

Also, How do they verify that one has been stayed in the US for 5 years? Do they check passport for entery records?
