Wanted to try to get an interim EAD as my company has benched me ...
Day 1: Wed. May 19th:
Arrived in line at 7am at Houston Local INS office. Probably around 100 people ahead of me outside the building. Took about an hour to go inside to join about 100+ people in another line to go the initial window to get a ticket. Reached the window at around 9am only to hear:
- Sorry, no more tickets for today as we don't have the man power
But I was so desparate to get the EAD that I turned around and went back to the end of the long line again. Reached the window again around 10:25am. This time another officer informed me:
- You need to bring a letter from your employer that they are about to terminate your employment if an interim EAD is not issued. And come back with the letter before 10:30am and we will present it to our supervisor for consideration.
Called my company and it took them 16 hours to decide that they cannot issue me such a letter due to legal implications. I kind of gave up on going back without the letter until a good co-worker (with authority) issued me a letter at 9am Thu. Wed May 20th.
Day 2: Thu. Wed May 20th.
Rushed to the INS office, made a line, got inside the building, made another line, and reached the ticket window at 10:30am only to hear:
- Sorry, no more tickets for today as we don't have the man power. We start giving tickets at 6am so come back tomorrow. Pleaded to the guy to take the papers to the supervisor and ask if she can make an exception as I am out of work. He came back and repeated the same thing.
Day 3: Fri. Wed May 21st
Got in the outside the building line at 5:55am (100 people in front of me!), got into the building, joined the ticket window line and reached the window around 7:40am only to hear:
- Sorry, no more tickets for today as we don't have the man power. This time around though they were kind enough to give me an orange ticket that would allow me to bypass any line when I report again for the 4th time on Monday May 24th at 6am sharp! Since Houston office only processes EADs on Wed/Thu/Fri, there are no guarantees that my Monday trip will result in an interim EAD.
For now I am so glad that I don't have to go on Sat/Sun as any more standing in lines might have caused a blood clot in my legs!
I contacted my congressman's office this afternoon and the lady was pretty kind and supportive and said that she will tackle the EAD issue right away and then the pending I-485 cases. Will inform you guys with the final outcome.
