What can I say.... I applied for a re-entry permit after getting my green card. But since I had a valid RTD at the time of applying, they refuse to issue me a re-entry permit, and I lost my 110 dollars. I indicated in my application that I may be out of the country more than one year but they refused to read what I wrote. Now if I am to appeal their stupid decision, I have to pay another 110 dollars. Any suggestions?

Shamshon,

Sorry to hear the bad news regarding your travel document. I have a question. Did you submit your valid RTD with your Re-entry permit application? If your answer is yes, then the IIO made a bad desicion. If your answer is no, the the IIO is perfectly right because if he issued you a re-entry permit, then you will have two official valid US documents with one saying you are an asylee and other one saying you are a permanent resident. This could cause all kind of confusion internally and externally.
It happend to me two years ago. I submit an application for a new RTD while mine is still valid for another four month. I had a plan to travel for a month or so and by the time I get back, my new one would arrive. They sent me a letter stating that the only way for them to issue a new one is to submit the valid one that I have. I submitted it and ruined my travel plans after already buying my tickets.

See, when i applied for my RTD, i was still waiting for my green card. Now, i have a green card and i have a great position overseas that may demand that i stay more than a year outside the USA. I wanted to do the right thing by applying for the re-entry permit. Do you think i should give them my RTD back and ask them to issue me a new re-entry permit? I also want to let you know that my RTD says clearly that i am a permenant resident.
