INS refusing to stamp passport

The INS Office in NY City has informed me that they are not stamping passports for Permanent Residents until further notice. This is based on a notification from Washington.

I went in this afternoon to the NY City office with my approval notice and all relevant information. I was asked to submit all my paperwork, sign the form and do my fingerprinting. Upon completion, I was handed a pamplet with a 800 number ( 1-800-375-5283). I was asked to keep calling this number for any updates to the rule. They are predicting that the physical Green Cards will take about 9 - 12 months to arrive. I was asked not to travel outside the country without a green card.

As I logged on to inform all of you of this experience, I did notice that a couple of people were able to get their passports stamped in NJ yesterday. So I am not sure if the ruling is being followed universally.

No Title

Is it possible you have same name as a suspect they have in databank?
They probably need security check on you?

Good one!!

No. its a blanket rule for all applicants. All the people in the line ahead of me were told the same thing. THEY ARE NOT STAMPING ANY PASSPORTS IN NY until further notice.

It is the same scene at Arlington, VA for this week (May 20-24)

Newark, NJ just resumed stamping again after a brief halt last week. Let us hope NY and Arlington also resume stamping next week..

Good luck

I\'m still waiting to go to Newark for stamping. Today\'s postings have very mixed message and I\'m a little worried. Do you happen to know what the latest approval date of the people you saw in NY office? Is it because cases approved before a certain date, say 5/13, wasn\'t checked against the new system and therefore need one more check at the local level?

Not the case

This is a blanket rule at the NYC center. They are not checking any information on the approval notice. All applicants, irrespective on their approval date, are being told the same thing.

Good luck in Newark

went to NY INS office second time for pp stamping .Following info

Hi NY485,
Earlier did not find anyone one in NY .
Did you go to 26 federal plaza?
Do post if you get any notice from the INS Office.
I posted the following in Newark complaint line.
---------------------
Earlier had gone on May 17 . They took fingerprints, Adit photos and
aproval letter. But did not stamp passport.
I went down again today to INS office.Stood in line. They are not stamping for new people too!. Went for information in the info centre.got token.
wrote in an application for enquiry. On finally reaching the line , got the same person who had earlier taken my finger print ,letter, photos .
I told her this stamping business is not consistent. They still do not know that it is being stamped all over the country other than some specific state. She :-"Mam , Have got orders from Washington"
Me:-"Hey , it is not consistent".
She looking at another person in uniform
She:- she says they are stamping elsewhere.
he:-The current order from washington is no stamping. Will stamp on further notice.
She:- he is my supervisor. If he says no stamping. No stamping.
Me:- How do I track .What should I do next
She:-Wait for the letter. We will send you a letter.
--------------
She did not take the enquiry application form I had written.
--------
Went down to the line where the passport stamping takes place.
At the counter.
Me:-What should I do for emergencies to get out of the country.
She:-If you get a death certificate and have to go to the country where you belong , you will get the stamp. They have got new computers ,12 of them. So will take time to train and process.
----------
I thought it is better to wait for the so called letter that will come in post for people who have been rejected
and for new people in NY , I think it is better to wait till they start stamping like in Newark . But go if time is about to expire.

Same thing!!

Mary,Thanks for that information. I did go to 26 Federal Plaza for the stamping. They said the exact same thing about the stamping to me as well. However, they did not not mention the letter. All they asked me to do was to keep calling the 800 number and keep checking if the rule has changed. They suggested that I call the number after 4 PM as call volume is lower. Hope this information is of use to you.

Good luck!

PS: The help line number given was 1-800-375-5283.

Good News..Info related to Passport Stamping

Guys,

Went to Omaha INS Field office last friday (17th May) to get my Passport stamped. Due to the latest Backround Security Check issue, the INS officer took the photocopies of my I-485 approval notice and I-94 and told me that they will inform me by mail regarding when I can come and get my PP stamped. Surprise!! Received the mail from the local INS office on saturday (25th May) asking me to come and get my PP stamped on a specific date and time next week (Similar to the FP appointment). I was really surprised by the quick response by the INS after the Security Check.
