My indian passport got somewhat damaged. It was on my wife's bag and she was having nailpolish in the same bag. Due to some jerks that nailpolish bottle got burst and it damaged the passport. However it did not penetrated inside the passport, but the corners of the passport are gone.First, last and visa pages are okay and numbers are visible clearly along with I-94,but nail polish got penetrated to the corner of the pages. Will that be an issue while in US? Should I make a duplicate passport?

Request your help!!!

It's not an issue while you're in the US. If you have another valid ID like a driver's license or state ID, and the I-94 is intact, you don't even need the passport for the green card formalities within the US like fingerprinting and interview.

Thanks a lot for your reply...

Will that be an issue when I go outside US and come back? Can I be asked questions at the port of entry?

If you are returning with Advance Parole or a GC and the AP/GC is undamaged, the passport is of less importance and the minor damage to it won't cause an issue for reentry. However, I have no idea how the authorities will react in the other country when you are arriving or departing from there.

You should apply for a replacement. That is normal practice. You never know how authorities may react to a damaged passport. YOu can apply for a replacement at your nearest Indian consulate.

Apply for Replacement of Passport.Airline tickets are booked on base of Passport number and name on Passport. Even if you have GC or AP that is for entry to US and Airline may create problems, FYI the Visa, I-94 don't get canceled if you get new Passport Copy. Keep both the New passports and damaged passport Stapled. When apply for new Passport with Indian Consulate take out the I-94 from old passport because they have to cancel the old passport and when get new passport staple the I-94 in your new Passport. Keep the Copy of all the Pages of damaged passport and Copy of I-94(front and back) with you.

Thanks all for your help!!! I will get replacement passport done in US. Actually I am not GC holder, I am on L1 VISA. Just a quick question please, If I get a new duplicate passport then what about my VISA on old passport? VISA pages also have minor nail polish color, but numbers, photos and all other stuffs are clearly visible. I think that VISA stands valid correct?

----------------- VISA Stamp will remain Valid till Validity of Visa stamp and if you go out of US when enter US show the visa stamp in damaged passport and keep both the passports stapled.

Does anyone knows the current fees for this? I am not sure, I checked it online and it says $40 and $125, not sure which MO I have to prepare. Because in my case I have passport with me along with all the numbers, photos visible. Not sure if that will consider in their damage category or renew category?
