Hello friends,

I am on H1 visa and my wife is on dependant visa. We are expecting a baby in few weeks from now. We have to go to India as soon as possible after the delivery. I have following questions:
1) How soon can we travel to India after the baby is born? What is the minimum time required to complete the formalities like birth certificate, SSN, passport, pio card etc. for a new born baby to travel to India?
2) Is SSN necessary for applying for passport?

Please reply. Your help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Born Citizenship

When baby is born in hospital it self you can apply for SSN and you will receive her birth certificate about 10 days . and SSN about same time.

once you have SSN and birth certificate you can apply for passport rush passport option is also there .

I have not seen any rules that how old baby should be to get the passport but you can check regulations on their website .

to travel to India PIO card will take 15 to 25 days depend where you apply to expedite you can visit the indian ambesy to rush order it .

if you desperate to travel fast you can apply for 6 month visa you will receive that faster .

Passport forms and application can be submited to local post office also ( not all postoffice process it so check ahead)

when you apply for passport in post office or any location do bring baby and mother also or else they will not accept your application .

before you travel make sure baby will have required shots before leaving US

Good luck with your trip

Hotguynyc,

Thank you so much for your reply. So does it mean that SSN is required for applying for passport? Or just having a birth certificate is sufficient? I heard that SSN normally comes after 2 months. Is it true? Should I apply online for the birth certificate?

Thanks again for your reply!

When you make travel arrangements, make sure you will have a Bassinet available for you in the airplane. For this purpose you may need to book well in advance. Enjoy your baby and happy parenting

This raises one more question. Your baby will have US passport and will not require stamping in the passport. Given that you have to make sure if you need to take the baby with you when appear for the interview at the consulate. If you are not from the same place where the consulate is then you need not take the baby with you (if it is not required)
