I will soon be getting my US citizenship. I will be working in India. What type of India Visa should I get? Can I work with a simple visitor visa OR do I need a "work permit" of some sort? How long does it take to get this?

You need a work visa if you want to work in India. other option is PIO or OCI (OCI is better and best) if you are an Indian origin.

You will need a letter from your employer, financial statements, present address (usa address), and address in India where you will be staying, in order to get a work visa. It can be issued on the same day you apply for a visa. (no gurantee. It's up to the Indian embassy/consulate officer).

for PIO/OCI, the timeframe is between 3 months to 6 months.

The time to get pio/oci depends on your local Ind consulate. SF is super fast compared to Houston etc. My guess is that the work permit is more paperwork than the rest.

An India tourist visa (visitor visa) has a validity of 6 months to 10 years. This is a multiple entry visa. Each entry has a limited duration of 6 months.

PIO/OCI has no limits - you can stay as long as you want. That's why PIO/OCI is best. For PIO, if you want to stay more than 180 days, you will be required to register at the police station every month after 180 days. For OCI, you won't be required to register at the police station. For OCI/PIO paperwork, you don't need an employer letter and extra paperwork from India. For work visa, you will need it to work in India and there is limited duration for work visa - for example if your job contract's duration is 6 months, then they will issue 6 months work visa. If your job is a permanent job, I think they give you limited validity visa and you can renew it to extend work visa validity. OCI/PIO benefits are good because it allows you to work at any employer. It is like a green card.

By the way, you cannot use visitor visa to work in India. They will bar you idefinitely from entering India if they find out. Immigration agency is really improving rapidly and becomes very modern (They already computerized the computer system at every immigration control with all data across India) since economy in India is improviing. Also, more immigration agents (including raid agents, border guards, support agents, and inspectors) are hired. Sometimes they check your data on the computer on immigration exit control in India and they would see a red flag. So be careful.

I called the agency (https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/contact-us.html) that processes India visas. They told me I can get what is called an "Entry Visa"; this is only issued to people of Indian origin; apparently I can work in India when I am on this visa.

Can anyone confirm this?

I asked about "Employment" visa; this is apparently for people that are on a short-term transfer to India.

Check out this (I am not a lawyer):

I will be going to India for work/employment. My family will also accompany me during my stay in India. Which visa should I apply for? Would my children be able to study in India?

You must apply for an Employment Visa along with requisite documentation as per the relevant E-Visa checklist. Once your E-Visa application is approved, your wife and children may apply for Entry Visas in case they are accompanying you on your stay in India. Your children would be able to secure admission in schools/college in India once they have been granted Entry Visas. Kindly note that it is mandatory to undergo registration formalities at the nearest Office of the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of your arrival in India if you are going to stay in India for a period longer than 180 days.

I don't find any information about entry visa to allow Indian-origin people to work in India. maybe you can trust those officers at Indian embassy/consulate on entry visa since you spoke to them. let's see what other people in this forum suggests.

if you want to know about type of Indian visas, here are two links:

I have to go back to India sooner than the time it takes to get an OCI done. Unless there is a super-fast expedited service available for PIO/OCI; does this exist?

My plan is to apply for OCI in India.

I am leaving early next week.

Today I again talked to the people at travisaoutsourcing. Again they confirmed that people with Entry visas can work in India. They are citing some material published by the Home Minstry of India.

The ministry has all the laws and rules online somewhere if you can manage to search on the net. They have some excellent and very useful stuff online, and it takes a little time to find what one is looking for.

You can definitely apply for OCI once you reach India. The working on entry visa is something you will have to look into.
