incomplete records about travel abroad

Hi,

I am about to apply for citizenship after having been legal resident for 5+ years. The application asks for detailed records of ALL travels abroad since receiving legal status. Unfortunately, I have a very hard time reconstructing dates for all the short family and work travels, mostly back to Europe. I got a new passport from my home country in 2010 and no longer have the old one--so all the US immigration stamps that would provide the relevant information before 2010 are lost. Any advice?

Thanks!

Ulrich

This is why it's important to write down the trips outside the passport, immediately after each trip. Of course, it's too late for that now in your case ... do your best to reconstruct the travel dates, such as looking up old emails and credit card bills (if you used your credit cards abroad), and digging through your memory of the trips. And attach a statement explaining that the trips before x/x/2010 are approximate dates. If you're not close to the limits of physical presence or continuous residence, it shouldn't be a problem.

I had the same problem and it put me off from applying for a long time. Coming back from UK one time the immigration officer asked why I had not applied for citz told him my problem he told me to just do my best and not to worry about it. I did just that and I was never even asked about it at my interview. Try to reconstruct best you can.

You can file a FOIA request to get entry/depature records from border control but the bad thing is it takes soem times

The application is saying "to your best knowledge". If you have >2.5 years within the 5 years where your were physically present you are fine.
