I got naturalized last Friday and I have to travel this coming Friday.
Once I knew my oath date, I scheduled an appointment at the NY passport agency (which is a State Dept office) for Monday morning.
I had to wait 45 minutes on Monday morning. You just need a DS-11 form, two passport-size pictures and of course your certificate of naturalization and proof of travel withing the next 14 days (email with printed itinerary will do).
You need to sign the DS-11 form in front of the State Dept agent and that's it.
I was told to pick up my passport on the next day.
Eventually they do issue same-day passports, but ONLY if you travel on the same day or the following early morning.
This morning I went to pick it up and after a line to clear security at the entrance, I had no wait, went to another office, presented the receipt (which was given to me the day before), signed it, and the lady gave me an envelope with my new passport, passport card and the certificate of naturalization.
On my way back home I stepped into the SSA office and updated my status, took 5 minutes.
If you have to travel soon and live reasonably close to one of the 14 passport agency across the country, then there is no problem at all.
