USINPAC TO HAVE HISTORIC IMMIGRATION DIALOGUE ON CAPITOL HILL

Immigration issues continue to dominate the concerns of the ever-growing Indian-American community. USINPAC, the largest political action committee representing the voice of Indian-Americans on Capitol Hill, has scheduled a rare and historic direct face-to-face dialogue at the US Capitol with a member of Congress and the INS Commissioner. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee of Immigration, Border Security and Claims of the House Judiciary Committee and the Honorable Eduardo Aguirre, Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Home Land Security will meet with USINPAC to discuss:

Educating the public about the immigration application process

Expediting visa applications and clearing up backlogs

Case-by-case analysis of glitches in immigration enforcement

Improving and expediting the immigration process

This historic meeting is scheduled to be held on June 15, 2004. Your input is important to us as we discuss the concerns of our community. Good opportunity

This is a good opportunity for the Indian members to be involved in the political process and push the immigration agenda also. USINPAC is a PAC with money (I guess) and can influence the election process also.

This was the most ridiculous meeting that i have been too. What was supposed to be a moderated question-answer session turned out into a big photo shoot and publicity hogging campain for Sheila Jackson Lee's office.

The Director of USCIS comes in for just 15 mins and gives a big speech about how efficient his employees are and they are working on the backlog and he understands our pain being an immigrant too...blah blah blah. He did not even know which visa is for what and constantly refered to H1B visas as H2. He had no idea what I485 was for...now we know why the USCIS customer service is ridiculous....afterall it flows right from the top.

I liked the part that our Rajiv Khanna spoke about, infact what Rajiv said Sheila Jackson and Nolan Rappaprt her minority council had not even heard about.

All in all, pretty disapointing. I went with the thought that this might be a meeting where we as immigrants would have some say in the immigration matter but it was a pretty sad event.

In the end i do not know who benefited from this event USINPAC, USCIS or Sheila Jackson Lee's office but i can tell you it definately not us the immigrants.

similar views from my wife too as she was there.

Her case is pending since Nov 2001 and she though this meeting would help her atleast get some hearing with somebody but it didnt help.

Lets hope atleast that this meeting raised a few concerns and the Director and Ms Lee recognize the problems we face and will do something about it.
