Important AC21 question?

My Friend is a manager in a multination company. He filled for his green card through a different consulting company and got his labor and I-140 approved. His I-485 has been pending for 180 days now. His current job and job for which his green card was filled are the same. Now questions
a)Can he make use of AC21 portability?
b)He can readly obtain employement verification letter from his current company and has all the pay stub, can he file I-485 on his own without involving his current employer.

------ why he needs to file I-485 again? you wrote that HIS I-485 is filed and pending more than 180 days. he just need the I-485 filing reciept and can update the USCIS(where his I-485 is pending) he only needs to send AC21 letter, I-485 filing reciept copy , bettter if he attaches 3-4 recent pay stubs copy
